Which Nokian Tires are best?[ALL/1998] posted by c. choi on

Can anyone tell me the difference between the different Nokian tires? For example, what's the practical difference between the Hakk 1 and the Hakk 10, between the NRW-H and the NRW-T?
I live in New York City where we get some snow, but mostly get slushy wet roads. I need a tire that grips well in both snow and wet; safety is my main concern. I can live with a little rolling noise.
One person recommended NRW-H. A Nokian dealer dismissed this as an "all season" not a true snow tire, and suggested Hakk 1's instead. Did he say this because he makes more on the Hakk 1's, or is it really true? Can anyone make a suggestion?

I'm putting 4 Hakka 1's on my 1993 240DL sedan (185/70-14) this coming weekend, for snow possibilities in Connecticut. I live in a hilly part of Connecticut that gets a decent amount of snow. Several friends from the Vermont and upstate New York area have sung the praises of Nokian tires. They seem to agree the NRW's are more like very good all seasons, the Hakka 1's and 10's are true snow tires. I couldn't find but one dealer here in Connecticut, so I ended up mail ordering from Rouse Tire in Middlebury Vermont (800)388-4053. Great prices, much better than other places in Wisconsin, and the one dealer I could find here in Connecticut.
Go to Nokian's web site and read up on the merits of the different tires. I wanted studs for my tires, because we get ice and hard pack snow, plus the hills I mentioned.
I choose the Hakka 1's because they were Nokian's latest and greatest
design. The NRW's, like you mentioned, don't come with studs. I've been told the Hakka 10's are being discontinued, but I understand they are a great tire, and you may be able to find your size at a good price, since they are being
phased out by the Hakka 1's. I've included the Nokian link for your use.
Good luck. Let me know what you end up doing.
BTW, since my first Volvo (1971 142S), I've put three 5 gallon plastic buckets (paint, Dunkin' Donut, etc) filled with sand in the trunk over the wheels each snow season. About 50 lbs each bucket. Never got stuck.

Hakkapeliitta 1 is the best studded tyre Nokian tyres offer. But
if you want unstudded tyres, choose NRW, since Hakkapeliittas are
ment to be studded.
Generally those tyres which are ment to be studded should be studded,
or if you want unstudded tyres, choose ones that are ment to be
unstudded.
