M46 shift knob/OD button install question 700 1988

When replacing the shift knob on my 1988 740 Turbo M46 I see a white plastic collar that holds the female spade connections for the OD button. It looks like that collar is supposed to sit down in the knob, it's too wide to fit up through the bottom. The spade terminals are too wide to slide out of the collar though to allow the collar to slide down from the top of the knob. Is there a trick to install this or do I have to cut the spade terminals off, slide the wires up through the bottom of the knob, slide the collar down into the knob, then solder the spade terminals back on? There must be an easier way!! Anyone have suggestions? Thanks

Zack
