R12 A/C conversion to R134 200 1983

I am resurrecting an '83 240 GL w/ B23f engine I bought in a non-running condition. I want to convert original A/C system to R134, and am seeking guidance. The system is depressurized at this time, and other than being able to turn the belt pulley freely, the status of the compressor is unknown. The engine/tranny are out on the bench, fully reassembled after rebuild, and ready to be reinstalled. My questions are: Are there any tests/checks that can be performed to see if the compressor is worth converting? Assuming the compressor is good, what needs to be changed in the system for this conversion? Thanks for input!
