The stealer/dealer wants your $$$. If you had a head gasket leak, you would know it (see Klaus's reasoning).

I have a 1996 turbo and it has passed the last time I smogged it...bought it last year. No MIL at the time...passed with no issues at all. The previous owner (a good friend) reported that he never had any problems.
