You have a vacuum gauge in the instrument cluster, the boost gauge. At idle it should be in the white, and when decellerating it should be way down. If the needle doesn't move much, it could be that the vacuum line to the gauge is loose or disconnected.
That line by the #1 runner can only be felt with fingers. Removing the intake manifold should only be done when replacing the oil separator lines. If it has never been done, then it should be replaced as those lines get brittle with age. You will need a new gasket and at least 5 hours of time. FCP and others sell a kit.
