I don't have firsthand experience with the KAE, but that was the one I had heard lots of complaints about (someone had one fail within 400 miles!). There is a good thread at Matthew's Volvo site about rehabilitating the original Volvo one by replacing the two capacitors and some resoldering. There is another thread with discussion of the waveforms produced by the chip and the capacitors.
My Volvo OEM relay failed Monday night-- rainy and dark by the side of the road. I had a spare one from the pick-and-pull which got me back on the road quickly. I think I should make up the #15 to #87 jumper for my glovebox...
