My wife's 97 850 wagon, 210K automatic, NA, suddenly started running hotter than normal (intermittently), the A/C started cutting out and back in apparently at random, and it seems to be shifting late, particularly into OD. No warning lights at all.

These symptoms all appeared at about the same time -- I can't see how they're related, if at all. Any thoughts?

ok starter for 10...

if its not shifting then i gues its running higher revs (lower gear...) that would lead to it runing hotter perhaps..you dont say how much hotter...

when you kick down the aircon turns off automatically to give you max power...

im thinkign pnp switch or kick down adjustment...something in that area...perhaps...

i would do a cooant flush and thermostat replacemtn as precautionary anyway, i am assumming you have checked for fluids being contaminated (oil/water mixing) etc, i think i might also change the tranny fluid unless done very recently - these are all cheap self done jobs so do them and eliminate them FIRST...

Good thoughts. It's not running a LOT hotter, but the gauge is higher than usual. The AC switches itself off under those conditions? Didn't know that, thanks.

It does make more sense thinking of the shifting as the root cause. I'll take a look tomorrow. Thanks!

A/C switches off during full load as in when you push the accelerator to the floor...not necessarily when hotter than usual.

other thought would be sticking brakes....

that would effectively make you push the gas pedal harder, give you laater shifts and extra heat perhaps,

easy to tell drive a miel or two nad then get out and feel each wheel (carefully) that much sticking and i would expect the sticky ones to be (very)noticably hot...
