A squeaking 'bearing' noise from driver's side dashboard? 850

Hello,

I have a '96 850 GLT wagon, manual, with 227,000 miles on it. About a month ago, I noticed that while driving on the window, I hear a squeaking noise, that sounds similar to the bearing in the air blower located on the passenger side of the dashboard. This squeak is triggered once the car goes over approximately 50 mph. It seems to be coming from the point where the "A" column comes in contact with the dashboard. I've pressed my hand against different parts of the dashboard, and the column itself, but I can't isolate the noise. Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh

Where did you post your response? I've got the same problem and want to know what you found out. Thanks.

A squeaking 'bearing' noise from driver's side dashboard? 850 1996

George,

The squeaking noise, that sounded like a bearing, from the blower in the front dashboard, was coming from the driver's side. Specifically, at the point with the "A" column came in contact with the dashboard on the driver's side. I only heard this squeaking once the car exceeded 50 mph.

The problem was caused by the rubber strip underneath the hood that circles the fuse box. There is also a rubber strip that runs paralell to the side of the hood - fender side. The rubber strip had become raised, and was rubbing against itself and probably the hood at speeds in excess of 50 mph.

I pressed the rubber strip back into place, and then sprayed it with silicone, so that if it did to continue to rub against itself, it would be silent. Since pushing the strip back in place and spraying the silicone, the noise had disappeared. I hope this helps.

Hugh

If this only happens ar 50 and greater, I would suggest the door seal needs to be adjusted.

Klaus,

Thank you for the suggestion. Because the noise sounded like a "bearing squeaking" I never associated it with the door seal. I'll inspect it to see if it is loose, or has shifted. Thank you again.

Hugh

Masking tape the whole door and that will isolate whether it is a door seal or door alignment.
Does it change whether you have it in "REC" or not? Varied fan speeds? Defrost or floor?
IS your speed control unit consistent.
Vacuum and slight rips in diaphragm can be really troublesome to find.
Disconnect the speedo. any change?

Chuck,

I found the cause of the "squeak". I posted a seperate response so I could share my answer with all. Thank you for your reply.

Thanks, Hugh. I'll checked under the hood and see if I've got a similar problem.
