M41 J type O/D solenoid test 120-130

I've got a used M41 J type O/D that I would like to test O/D solenoid before I install it in my car. Could I just jump it to a battery or is this a bad idea? Also is there anyway to test if the O/D itself is going to work properly before installing?

Thanks,

Bob

If you find a solenoid in a junkyard and you don't have 12 volts immediately available, shake the thing. If you hear a distinct rattle, chances are good that the solenoid will do its job -- no rattle, no good. A muffled rattle can mean that the solenoid has filled with oil. Some people have managed to open and drain them -- not I. :-(

Bob,

Since the OD is off the tranny, do yourself a favor and do some preventive maintenance prior to installing the OD. For lesss than $40 if you get parts from the right place you can "rebuild" the OD.

At minimum, replace the two O-rings on the actuating pistons that are only accessable with the OD off the tranny.

Look here

at parts number 50. If there are any other seals that need changing, they can be done later. But while the OD is on a bench why lay on your back to do what you can do standing up unless your under a hoist at which point I'm envious.

Spin the OD via the output shaft and listen for bearing noise. Look in the front past all the stuff and scan as much of the part number 43 that you can see. The bearing should look OK and what face of the sliding member you see should be scuff mark free.

The solenoid. Twelve volts should make it click. A nice sharp metalic sound not damped in any way. Amp draw should be between 2 to 2.4 amps.

Unless you have a diagram of whats under the plugs, remove only the largest and clean the filter. The center plug has three very small parts that love to get lost or not back into correct alignment which caused all sorts of problems if you even get the ability to get into OD at all.

Yes you can jump one terminal to 12V and the other to ground. You should hear a solid "click" or "thunk" inside the solenoid. Bear in mind though that although the solenoid appears to operate, it is possible that the o-rings inside may be worn and leaking...I don't think there is any "bench" test to check their integrity though. Most cases, the o-rings are ok. I wouldn't change the o-rings yet. That is an easy enough repair to do after you have tested the solenoid on the car.

No easy way to test the overdrive when it is out of the car.
