1999 V70 automatic transmission fluid change HELP HELP HELP V70-XC70 1999

Help me out. I've changed auto trans fluids over the years in many cars. However, my 1999 V70 has a "semi-sealed" system with no dip stick for checking and/or refilling. I've searched the internet, no info on how to do this. I bought the UK version of the Haynes manual for V70 which only covers a transmission oil change for cars with dip sticks.

I'm going a bit batty.

Has anyone done this job? Where are the drain locations and where are the refil locations? ANY assistance appreciated.

OH, yeah, and do you have to buy Volvo TYPE C coolant when you change your coolant or is there a substitute?

THANKS!!!

Look carefully where Haynes says the dipstick is. You will find it on top of the auto box tucked underneath a wide flexible pipe. It probably has a yellow top with a spring clip to hold it down. Just push the pipe to one side, ease the spring clip forwards and withdraw the dipstick. Best checked with the engine hot.
Reading these posts, I must get around to changing my fluid some time. Don't know if it was done before I got the car.

When I changed over from Dino ATF to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, my mileage went up by 2mpg. Speaks volumes about friction reduction. Yup, it costs more do do a flush with this but...

I'm glad to hear that you are planning to change the fluid. Many people never change the fluid and then wonder why their auto transmission fails at 80,000 or so miles. Amazing how clueless some people are who own expensive cars.

I re-read your original message and you said that there was no dip-stick. Are you absolutely sure? I know it's hard to find if you don't know where it is, but you should have one somewhere. You need it to add the ATF when you do the flush yourself without one of those flushing machines. But...if you're definitely sure you don't have one, then the only way I'd say you can flush it is with the machine, like in this picture:

Unfortunately, the DEALER adds to the consumer's ignorance in this case.

Here is an excerpt from the '99 owner's handbook...... your car does have a dipstick.

    pg. 127 Automatic transmission fluid

Check the oil level as follows:

Park the car on a level surface with the engine idling . Slowly move the gear selector lever through all the shift positions and then to position P. Wait 3 minutes before checking the oil level.
As the illustration shows, the dipstick has a COLD and a HOT side. The oil level should between the MIN and MAX marks. Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth.

WARNING! The oil may be very hot.

Do not use rags that could leave lint on the dipstick. The transmission is topped up via the dipstick tube. The space between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick corresponds to 0.5 US qt. (0.5 liter). Do not fill the transmission with too much oil, since this can result in oil being ejected from the transmission. Too little oil, on the other hand, can negatively affect transmission operation, particularly in very cold weather.

A Cold transmission: oil temperature 105° F (40° C). This is a normal temperature for the transmission after idling for about 10 minutes. At oil temperatures below 105° F (40° C), the level may be below the MIN mark.
B Warm transmission: oil temperature 169° F (80° C). This temperature after driving for about 30 minutes. At oil temperatures above 190° F (90° C), the level may be above the MAX mark.

Fluid type: ATF Dexron IIE/III and Mercon.
