how to change gear box light bulbs? S40-V40 2001

Hello,

I would like to know how can I open the gear box console and change the light bulb? Obviously my dealer want to charge me like $100 to change it and I told them to forget about it. But still, I don't mind changing it myself but just couldn't find a way to open up the console... and don't know which is the right bulb to buy as well.

Thanks,
Allen

Send me an email and I'll send you a diagram with the instructions. Once center console is out, use a screw driver to turn the bulb holder a 1/4 turn to remove. Reinstall the bulb in the holder and reinstall both together the same way you removed it. Believe the bulb is the same as for the cigarette lighter light, but I'm not sure...never was able to find this. If the same, then it's a small 1.2watt bulb (in a W2x4.6d socket) bulb #8- same as many of the intrument lights including the warning lights and lights with switches. Good luck, and let me hear from you if you want the diagram.

You're talking about the light that shows you what gear you're in, right? I replaced the bulb last year. It's a tiny European bulb. The trim around the shifter pops out. Use a wooden letter opener or something that won't scratch anything. You'll see the tiny bulb. Take it your local auto parts (e.g. Kragen) store and get a replacement. It's a little tricky putting the light bulb back in so it's aligned to the mechanism that shows what gear you're in, but you'll get the idea. Hard to explain. I did the job in 15 minutes. Took about 10 min. to get the alignment right.

      Thank you DavidSF S40-V40 2001

I tried to take everything apart, the armrest, console and yet I couldn't get to see the bulb but I saw something looks like a cable printer that indicates what shift you are in. David, you said the trim a round the shifter pops out, does it have clips so that you can pop it back on you know?

I don't know if there are clips but it won't be a problem pushing the trim piece back in place. It just snaps into place. Like I said the tricky part is getting the bulb aligned properly so that the correct gear is shown. It took me about 10 min. of trial and error to get the alignment right.
