850 A/T very delayed shifting out of 1st gear 850

My 1995 850 (base) with A/T has developed a problem in the last few days. Upon cold start and driving forward, it does not want to leave 1st gear, even though I'm most definitely in "D". After a mile or so it will shift. I've stopped and done the rapid run through the gears with the shifter, not sure if it's helping or not. Upshift light is NOT lit while it's stuck in 1st. Shift mode switch remains in ECON.

Any ideas? PNP switch replacement on the horizon?

    For what it's worth I had this symptom when the connections to the mode switch were open (after removing/replacing center console). However I had a check engine light, the uparrow flashing, the code said mode switch open or short circuit and the light in the mode switch was dark. I read that if the mode switch is uncertain - for instance if some object is sitting on it and disturbing it from rest - you could get these symptoms. With the bad mode switch connection the upshift was delayed (though maybe less so) even after the gearbox was warmed up.

    There are solenoids in the valve body specific for different gear shifts and also one for torgue converter lockup. Maybe your first to second solenoid is bad?

      Sounds like I'd have to pull the tranny to figure that out?

      There are no A/T ECU codes flashing, BTW. Always 1-1-1.

      I've got a PNP on the way courtesy the boys at Beechmont Volvo. ($111) Let's hope that does the trick.

    That was the initial symptom of my trouble with PNP switch. If you have never replaced it, and if you are above 100K miles, a PNP replacement is in order. And it always fails when it is cold. The reason for that is that the grease inside it gets harder when its cold.

      You can, and I would, try replacing the gear position sensor (PNP) and it may help but do not be suprised when you need a trans to fix this problem. I have had a few customers with this very problem and we tried everything we could only to end up replacing the transmission in the end.
