ABS Help S70 1998

Please Help! My S70 (1998) ABS Light on the dash board goes on and off randomly. Most of the time it is goes on when I first start the car, then goes off after a couple of minutes (a few turns and applying brakes). Then goes back on after about 15-20 times of stepping on the brake during city driving and stays on from this point. I tried braking hard on a wet road with it off, ABS works fine. Then I tried brake hard when it is on, ABS doesn't seem to be working properly, but sometimes it feels like it is trying to go on. Can someone please help me and provide me with some advice on how to troubleshoot this problem?

On the side, does anyone know a good mechanics that knows Volvo cars to go to around downtown Toronto Ontario for maintenance and repair?

Thank you very much!

Greetings:
If you are still looking for an independent repair shop in the downtown Toronto, area, you might try STS United Motors. They are on the south side of Dundas, between Broadview and Logan. I don't seem to have their number handy, but it should be in the white pages. A former colleague used to take his beloved 960 wagon to them all the time. They will not rip you off. They seem to work on lots of foreign cars. On the other hand, many people seem to like Victor Rocha and his service; since you are new to the board, you may not know how frequently he has been recommended.
Another highly competent shop is START Electric, also on Dundas Street, but between Sherbourne and Parliament. They do all kinds of mechanical repairs and are especially good at solving electrical mysteries and doing a/c work. When I was last there they were restoring the a/c pressure hoses on an ancient Mercedes-Benz 600 (they were making the hoses as needed). They are a little more expensive that STS, but they are great at determining the problem and then fixing it without replacing everything in sight.
Good luck - enjoy your car.

Do a search for ABS, Tracs off, on this AWD board. You will find that you are probably looking at $600 to replace the ABS computer, or you can send it to a guy in California who will fix it for around 150.

Don't go to Lawrence Park Volvo. They scammed me once.

Ah yes, welcome to the ABS problems with our model of vehicle. Check out http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/ He explains it better than I can and will do the repair for cheaper and better than Volvo ever did or will.

Absolutely. I went through two of these in the 200K miles I owned my S70.
