Loose Passenger Head Rest V70-XC70 1999

I have noticed that on rough roads my passenger head rest makes a rattling noise. I have held it and the noise stops. I could push something down the rods that hold the held rest on. Has anyone else had this annoyance. Appreciate your response.

You might want to try and pull it off and then slam it back in? One of the push pins in the seat back may have been pushed and is no longer holding one of the shafts.
I wouldn't reccomend wraping the tubes with a thin layer of electric tape and putting the headrest back on. You may never get it iff again.

Just tell the state that the roads are too rough!

As I stated to "Made in Japan", I dont believe it is movable. Thus the problem. I may have to call a dealership and talk with the body shop.

The headrests do come off. I used to live in Missouri, so I will show you in words:

There are 2 shafts on the headrest that go into tubes in the top of the seat. There is a plastic lock between the leather on the back of the seat and the shaft. Feel through the leather for the 1/2 inch plastic lever, fush it toward the shaft and lift up the headrest. Of course it helps to have four hands, two to press the latches and two to lift the headrest!
Been there, done that,

That's good to know...now why in the world doesn't Volvo put information like this in the owner's manual. If I were 7 feet tall, this would be pertinent information. Of course if I were that tall, I would want to be able to extend my front seat all the way back to where it actually touches the rear seat as well. Thank God, I'm only 6ft and apparently built for the location of the head rest. Okay, I rambled...but nice to know something new about your car. I'll check out the moveability of the head rest next time I'm in the car. Thanks!

I guess Volvo never wanted the general public to remove the headrest from the seatback. Remember, they are not adjustable. One is only supposed to take the headrest off while repairing the seat covering which tends to wear our after 100K miles, unless the seats are made of cloth which wear better than leather and are softer.
At 6'7", it would be nice to raise the headrest. There isn't a car on the market which will protect me in the event of a rear end collision. I would rather the designers raise the roofline so that I could see out of the windshield and raise the rearview mirror so that my vision isn't blocked. Right now, all 2001 and newer models prevent me from driving by creating a very large blind spot to my right front. Add to that, the abillity to see more than 300 feet down the road because the roofline dropps to meet the windshield.
Perhaps I should look for my dream city car: An old British tank with rubber wheels, painted dayglow orange with a plow mounted on the front. Turret not required!

I suppose the only way to deal with your height is to put the seat all the away back, and all the way down to the floor, tilt your steering wheel all the way down, and extend it all the way towards you. Still, you have visibility issues? I would think there are some tall Swedes around too...wonder how they cope?

Have you tried lowering the headrest so it's snug agains the top of the seat?

To the best of my knowledge, the front passenger heatrest does not adjust up & down. So what is option B?

Just went out and looked at my S70. If yours is anything like mine, you are absolutely right. Don't know why it's so loose. There is a zipper on these seat covers. Don't know if taking the cover loose is going to help either. In an exploded diagram of the head rest, it is evident that it is installed with 2 metal shafts that sit into the lower seat but there doesn't seem to be any way to adjust it. I'm really stumped. Maybe you could put weight on it and just try to shove it down further. If that doesn't work, then try looking at what's causing the vibration to begin with...slightly unbalanced rear tire(s), etc.

Appreciate your efforts. The tires are aligned and balanced. It comes from any rough road vibration. I will try to push down on the head rests, however I will be surprised if this would be a cure. Stay tuned.
