Stranded but not stranded 850 1995

My heart lept into my throat today. I was 20mi from home driving along a back road (in driving rain with deep puddles on the sides of the road). I slowed to turn around in a driveway, and as I shifted the transmission from D to 3 while going about 3mph I saw all the idiot lights come on (actually I don't think the CEL was on). As I shifted to park and readied to turn the ignition off, thinking about how I was ever going to get home, I looked down and noticed the idiot lights off. Surprised, I noticed the engine was still spinning. The radio was on so I didn't have sound as a clue. Relieved, I turned around and continued with no problems. I believe in shifting from D to 3 another time today the transmission momentarily downshifted further than 3 (1 or 2). I quickly shifted back to D and everything was fine. You may recall I had a problem downshifting from D to 3 a few weeks ago, causing the arrow to blink. I am wondering if my PNP is acting up. Any thoughts?

    Don,
When was the last time you changed the serpentine belt and tensioners? The belt got wet and when you shifted from D to 3, the tranny goes into "neutral" before grabbing third gear and your rpms fell and the belt slipped. It's OK. No harm done. BTW, I shift my cars a lot. The neighborhood is hilly and the speed limit is 25 or 30, so I like to be in 2nd gear - the cops are nasty. I always figured that I was helping the PNP switch stay clean.
Check your tranny fluid and flush it every 25K miles.

I know others have mentioned on this board that rain can cause the accessories belt to slip and make the dash "light up like a Christmas tree." Shifting like that, while still going slow, may have increased the RPM's enough to make the belt slip a little. Previous posts dealing with this usually have the person driving and hitting a puddle, which splashes water up onto the belt. Just a thought.

Also, when my PNP acted up, no lights but the arrow came on for me. While I didn't shift my car but from drive to park to reverse, etc, it did act funky sometimes in drive (starting up like it was in winter mode).

Sounds like PNP...but why in the world are you shifting with an auto? I just never do that.

To answer your question, the first shift was b/c I was almost stopped, and preparing to shift to reverse when fully stopped. The second one is another matter. As you may recall from my posts of a few wks ago, I have always owned a MT car until this one. So, I have carried over my shifting habits from my 27 years of driving MT. Since the problem with the blinking ->, I have tried not to downshift above 40mph. It looks like indeed it would be a good idea to leave it in D. Afterall, I have done the brakes all around and know how it's done now.
