Smoking 850 from tailpipe 850 1995

Help,
When I pull over at the red lights and start, a cloud of smoke rises.Lately my oil has been burning a lot...been buying new quarts a lot. A month or 2 ago, I got the check engine message saying 'system too rich'
To add misery, someone reported me I think the the DMV and I got a letter saying that my emissions check is coming up soon.
Oh woe is me bricksters...please help.

You are either leaking so much oil externally that it is burning off of the manifold and other places and making a truly James Bond like cloud or it is sucking oil past the intake seals and burning it up in the combustion process. My money is on the later of the two and that is not good news. You mentioned that you are up for a smog inspection, are you in California and is it test only? Sounds like you have a new car or a bus pass in your immediate future whether you like it or can afford it or not.

So your car has been using a lot of oil and smoking for how long? Did you bother to look in the phonebook for a mechanic? When was the last time you had a tune up? Compression check?
I cannot help you. I only help people who try to help themselves, or want to learn. Perhaps you should trade your car in for a Toyota.

              OK Guys here's the scoop 850 1995

First off Dewey, my bad I was lazy and forgot my real pwd. It was sunny and didnt want to ruin the day searching for ID's but fixing the car.
Steve, It is 850 GLT..not turbo. I saw earlier posts stating the obvious like clean the flame trap housing. Where is that? Haynes doesnt mention it.
Klaucs, wasn't it you the other day that came looking for help here? Now, you are holier than thou? Funny how memory fades when its payback. Anywy I dont need your patronizing help...ppl like you offer no solutions just add 2 the problem with strife.
Rule308, the oil is not leaking..not a drop outside so I think it may be a seal...just want to avoid doing that in the winter. I'm in MD and its freezing. Anyway, no sweat I've had a bimmer and MVA let me "postpone" the retest for a year and I just re-sold it coz computer diagnosis/fixes are typically costly.

Sorry for the Dewey Joke...Flame trap info. 850 1995

Sorry about the Dewey remark...Believe there is a Klaus and a Klausc...not the same guy....LOL

Now for the flame trap. There is a large air hose connected to the throttle body..know where that is? It's right next to where the 5 ignition wires are that go to the spark plugs. Looking at this hose from the front of the car, there is a smaller hose protruding from the front of this hose. There are also a couple of hoses joined together in a connector which is connected to the back of the large hose (towards windshield). This is where the flame trap is. In '96 they got rid of the flame trap so it wouldn't hurt to just take the thing out and throw it away and not worry with it anymore. Anyway, the smaller connector is fitted into the larger hose by way of a "bayonete socket." Twist the connector about 15mm (about 1/2 inch) to the left and it will pop out. Replacing it is the same way in reverse, but get it right...if not it will effect the sensitivity of your throttle. There is a circular filter in the connector...take it out and pitch it. Also while you're in the connector, clean it out with some "air intake" cleaner and/or blow it out to clean...STP makes a good intake cleaner in a spray can you can buy at AutoZone or other car parts stores. Good luck. BTW, you can also clean your throttle and other air hoses with this great stuff. Just let it all evaporate and dry before putting things back together and starting your car.

                  Same Problem 850 1995

I had the same problem you had with major smoking and the back of my tailgate would be covered in an oily residue! I had the throttle body cleaned and cleaned the flame trap. Then all was good

                  Good Luck!
