winter tires, need advice 850 1997

Hi,

I am looking to buy winter tires, actually tires+rims (195/60 R15) for the family wagon. At the end of the day, this seems to be a $600+ proposition, does that sound right? I was offered a package with Toyo Observe Go-2 tires (incl. rims, alignment, install etc) for $699. Would that be a good choice? My priorities are wet/snow/ice traction, and tread life. I plan on driving around upstate NY, Canada, Michigan this winter.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I purchased virtually new Blizzaks for my 96 850. Ran them last year, and I am more than impressed. I am usually a studded tire gal, but these tires rock. We get a lot of ice, and some snow here in the high desert of Oregon. I can barely get this car to slide with these tires. great grip, and the wear seems to be quite good with them.

I know they aren't cheap, but tire rack does sell them---they are great tires. two thumbs up from me.

Another vote for tirerack.com - you can have sent direct to a local installer or to your house. You can get reviews of various tires and you can get wheels. Without some high pressure 'dude' pushing the tire of the week. Depending on the tires I've gotten, including shipping & mounting, I figure I save $10 to $45 a tire ($10 on 185/65r15 on my 850, $50 on my diesel pickup with 265/75r16)

Look, just call Tire Rack and get this settled for the best price you will find anywhere. They will help you decide on a tire package based on where you live. Really, it is a no brainer. I have used them for both of my Volvos for the last 10 years. Find them online at tirerack.com.

PS one of my Volvos is a 97 855. I just put new Michelin Winter-Xs on for less than $400.

    Hi,
My wife`s 850 wagon came with a set of Gislaved snows. They were pretty good tires for our winter conditions here in Alberta( only maybe 6-8 days of bad winter weather thru the season but Boy! when you need snow tires you REALLY need them!). Anyway, after a few seasons they needed to be replaced & my wife was talked into Toyo Go-2`s. I really wouldn`t recommend them at all. I drove the car thru mountain passes after a blizzard & it was scary. I put Hakka`s on last winter & once again I felt secure with those tires on the wagon. I`m sure there many brands of good winter tires, ie, the Arctic Alpins but my experience has been with the above tires.
    Good luck
    Rich

    Check this out on Ebay:

4 wheels for $400 and hubcaps are not required! Center caps, maybe.

Yes you can get cheaper deals than $600-700, but always devide by 4 and it doesn't sound too expensive. Also remember that snow tires and Interstate generated heat are not compatable, the tires wear out faster. Perfect for Southern CT.

I've used Nokian Hakka in Northern NewEngland/Quebec. Awesome winter tyres! One of the top two brands in Scandinavian tests. http://www.nokiantyres.com/ Any one tried the new Nokian RSi?

I've had very good luck with Michelin Arctic Alpins. Hardly tell they are snow tires on dry, incredible wear, excellent traction on snow and ice. If you are looking to buy steel rims and tires as a package, Tirerack.com is an excellent place to go--that is how I bought my Arctic Alpins and was very please with price and service. Tirerack has excellent reviews and comparisons that you would be hard pressed to find in a typical storefront. I live in a ski area in Utah and commute daily up and down a canyon from 7,200' to 4,200' through some nasty blizzard conditions, so I really give my snow tires a workout....

I had a set of Artic Alpins, and just replaced them with the new model X-Ice. I got 4 winters out of the Alpins, about 28,000 miles I figure, which is good considering the compounds and the fact that a lot of the driving was done on cold, but clear and dry roads in Southern Michigan. They are a little "squirmy" I call it, compared to my summer tires, Yoko ES100's.

They cost around 80/ea, plus mounting, so about $20/year if they follow the Alpins wear pattern. There was some tread left, but I don't want to push it, and you need more tread depth for snow than water. I kept the same size, 195/60R15, but you could go for a smaller width (185) tire.

They are directional so make sure your installer, or you, are aware of that.

Tirerack and tires.com are selling tire/wheel combos, too, for a very good price, even free shipping at tires.com.

Also Artic Alpins just replaced with X-Ice 850 1997

Only got 2 seasons out of the Alpins, the previous set of Vredstein studded snows lasted 4 seasons. (But the racket from the studs was making me deaf!)

Also bought from Tire Rack the latest set mounted on new wheels, the old ones were very rusty and I was worried about the seal.

I have Dunlop Winter Sports on my Acura, but they're more of a 4-season tire that's OK in the snow, the Michelins are more dedicated winter tires that you can drive on a dry road.
