Clunk sound from frontend S70 1999

I have a 99 S70 T5 with 75K miles on it. Occasionally when I go over bumps I'll get a decently loud clunk sound from the front end. It almost sounds as though the car is bottoming out but it's no where near that large of a bump.

I know this is really little information to diagnose a problem with, however, if you can suggest anything else I can tell you or how I can trouble shoot this problem to narrow it down it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again guys!

Jim

In addition to the suggestions presented so far, you might also check your two anti-sway bar bushings. When mine became worn, I had the kind of clunks you describe. When they were replaced with the new IPD bushings, my whole front end quieted down and now feels rock solid.

Check and make sure your battery is properly secured with the hold-down clamp.
I racked my brain trying everything to diagnose a similar problem to yours. I took it to my indy and he discovered that it what it was. Just a suggestion!
Good luck!
Bob

If the suggestions here don't help you...in other words, these aren't your problem, then I would (actually I would check this anyway) check out your rubber engine mounts. If one of these break, you'll get a loud clunk or thud over bumps and possibly when shifting too.

Had similar problem in my S80. It was the strut mount, which is a common problem in the S80. Don't know if it's a known issue with the S70 or not, but worth looking in to.

I should also add that I can feel the clunk in the steering wheel as a dull shake as well.

I had a similar sound in my S70...ended up being my swaybar endlinks.

Ditto: sway bar links. This is a very common problem on these cars. Get replacements here:

For reference, see the exploded view diagram here:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/CSV70/csv70shocks.htm

Any local service station should be able to replace both links for you in well under an hour's labor. You can do it yourself, but a lift and power tools are helpful.
