Throwing in the towel?

1995 850 GLT, 150,000 miles. The cars started gicing me alot of problems a while ago. Two months ago the engine developed a strange thumping sound everytime i turned on the car and would get progressively louder as I accelerated. At around 60 mph the car would shudder violently and it felt like some one was pounding a hammer under my foot. I took it to my local mechanic and he said the compressor needed to be replaced. I figured the 3 grand was worth it since the car hasn't given me much problems in the past and I always changed the oil on time. Car was running fine until about a month later when the my car would stall whenever I turned on the AC. Took it back into my mechanic and he said that the struts?? or something were rubbing against my timing belt and recommended I change the oil using a sythetic based oil and to add a little sugar to the gas tank "loosen up the pistons". Good thing was the AC problem was fixed, bad thing was I couldn't start it the next morning. My mechanic came over and checked out my car and told me that I needed the change my CV boots. I am considering if the 2 grand should be invested in a newer car. Anyone else with similar problems?

Just remember the rule with selling used cars, the car automatically increases in value for every new part, repair made SO it's now worth whatever you paid for it PLUS all those costly repairs. Just add it all up, put it on Ebay and you'll soon get every penny back.

Throwing in the towel, ......no way!

Yeah man, I hate that when my pistons tighten up from lack of sugar. I pour a 10lb bag into my tank every gas fill just to keep the gas sweet tasting, yum! It also helps make your exhaust smell sweet too and the guy tailgating me everyday then doesn't keep flipping me off due to smelly exhaust.

If all mechanics were like yours, we would still be riding horses.
Buy a new car and ditch the "mechanic".

    Throwing in the towel?

Good Tip! For these winter months good to throw in towel, extra blanket (even some old sweat pants & socks), flashlight and a snack to hold you over if winter weather stands you somewhere.

Seriously, if your mechanic charged 3 grand to replace AC compressor then find a new mechanic. Compressor costs under $500 ($375 + $49 for drier) at fcpgroton.com), labor should be a few hours and replacement should have been well under $1000.

Likewise 2 grand for CV boots, struts and t-belt probably close to twice what my mechanic would charge.

Yes our 850s require maintenance (and I have a '93), but sounds like there are better places to get it then you are going to.

I have some swamp land in Iraq that I will sell you for cheap, even if you're not interested.
