Service light...no codes/ '94 850 850

Got back from the UK last night, and pulled the '94 850 n/a out of long term parking at the airport...8 days since last driven.

I got a Service Engine light immediately, but it went out after 2 or 3 minutes. Car ran fine. Stopped a few minutes later for fuel (I left it at the airport nearly empty), and it did the same thing. All day today, each time I started the car, warm or cold, the light came on, and went out in a few short minutes. The car continues to run fine.

I just checked for codes, and both A2 and A6 are 1-1-1. (Nothing else should trigger the light, per VolvoSpeed) Started the engine, and the light came on as it has been. Shut the car down while the light was on, checked for codes, still nothing! I even tried starting the car, and checking while the engine is running (supposedly not advised), still all I get is 1-1-1! Checked all other sockets, and only got the the speed sensor signal, as expected.

I did find the rubber fuel line the the fuel rail is starting to crack, no seepage showing but a faint fuel odor under the hood, so that'll need to be replaced, but I can't imagine that triggering the service light. I also replaced the flame trap teh day before we left, but had no Service light until last night. I did check to see if it or one of the rubber lines came loose, but they were fine.

Any ideas why the Service light is acting this way?

Thanks!

Ron

Heh!.... Well I reset the service light, still strang that in 14,000 miles it's the first time it's lit..also found out that the car does have a check engine light, but it has never lit prior to starting, leading me to belive the service light was also the check engine light.

OK, this weekend I get to find out why the check engine light is not working. I hope it's just the bulb burnt out, and not that it's been removed for some nefarious (oh he!!, I can't spell) reason....

That is because it is your service reminder that is on and not the check engine light. It is working per design, do a search on service light reset and I am sure you will find the necessary information to reset the light yourself. You've had this car how long and this is the first time you've seen that light???

I've had it about 2 years, and 14,000 miles..how often does it come on? ( it had 80,6XX miles when it first lit...what an odd number!)

That interval is adjustable via the VST tool but the default on them is 5K, I believe they were adjustable in 2.5K intervals so you could have it set at 2500, 5000, 7500 intervals. It will go off 5k from whenever it was reset last so that if it was reset at 82157 it will come on again at 87157. Just change the oil if it is due and reset the light. If you want it to come on at even intervals then reset it when you roll over 85, 90, 95K etc. and it will be on the money for the next time.

The light comes on about every 10,000 miles.

Simple to reset - check out this link:

It's to tell you it's time to change your oil. If you don't set it each time you do an oil change it will come on every 10K as stated above. Lucky you, you can reset it with the "A" box under the hood, next to the winshield wiper fluid cap. On mine which comes on every 5K miles you have to use a special tool.

Oops...

What I was going to say is that it is odd that this is the first time in 14,000 miles it's come on...I thought it was more like a check engine light (I bought the car with no owners manual)

If you are interested you can view the owners manual content at:

http://www.volvocars.us/_Tier2/Owners/Library.htm

If you have the Adobe Acrobat software you could assemble the pages into a pdf file and save it on your computer.
