I have a 94' 850. For three months now I've had this problem. I start the car, drive somewhere(store,etc.) , get back in and the car is "dead" , no sound, except for the "dinging" and the display lights come up, but when I go to start it , nothing. If I wait 10to 20 min. it starts up again. This happened sometimes everyother day, sometimes it took a week to do this again. Now since its colder it seems to happen more. Now as of yesterday it wont start at all. The battery is good and the computer at a shop found nothing, of course it didnt do the" problem" when I brought it in a month ago. Can anyone help??

    Shift override is caused by microswitch that is under the shifter. You might need a new microswitch. I bypass that switch since I don't want to go through with problem in the future.
    As for PNP switch problem, try cranking the switch while move the shifter. What I meant was turn the key to start position and keep holding even though you don't hear the motor starting and at the same time try shifting the shifter. Mine starts between park and reverse and neutral and d1. I had to replace the PNP switch. It costs between $100 and $130. It's not too hard to replace but needs a lot of patience.

      My 195 850 Volvo also does the same thing. It'll start, get me where I'm going and then it won't turn on or make any noise like it's trying to start. Of course, this USUALLY happens at the gas station, of all places, right after I fill up. Luckily, I'm never really holding anyone up. I will try the solution you gave and hopefully that'll be the end of that, until something else goes bad lol.

    What is the PNP switch, how much does it cost?

      It's the park to neutral position (PNP) switch. Your car has to be in Park for it to start, but if the switch is messed up then it may think it's in another gear or neutral and therefore your car won't start. I have seen these on eBay as well as for less than the dealer, at www.fcpgroton.com they aren't that expensive...just a pain to remove the old and install the new.

    HI,
    If as you say, this problem is more frequent as it gets colder it sounds like it may the PNP switch. My wife`s 95 850 had the same symptoms a few winters ago & it was the PNP switch. It took a lot of investigative work at an indie shop which had no Volvo experience & of course, it was on my "dime". Should have towed to the dealer but we live 90 minutes away. Anyway, replaced the PNP & no problems since.

      It will usually start if, with the key on, you run the gear shift back and forth several times. You may try pushing the PNP button at least one time before after or as you do that.

      I have made a habit of cleaning the ground on the body in front of the battery
      a couple of times a year..

        I'll give that a try tomorrow its stuck at my mothers house. The shift override is something I always have to use to get it out of park, even when the car was working.
