Is it practicable to upgrade to WHIPS seats? S70 1998

If I found a salvaged newer Volvo sedan would it be practicable to install the front seats into my 1998 S70? In other words would I have to install entirely new seat tracks, etc? Anyone ever tried this? Note, my car does not seem to have SIPS from what I can tell from looking at the seats if this makes any difference.

I like my 98, but the WHIPS seats look like a huge safety improvement.

Tracks for the seats are different...not worth it and WHIPS included in 850's and 70 series in general. Fittings and the way your computer monitors things are different between the different series/models, so even if you could change out the tracks for the new seats, there is no guarantee things will work correctly...so forget it...If you need a new seat, find the one that goes with your model car. Much as been posted about this...One guy bought a "set" of seats from off of eBay and thought they would go in his car and they would not...he was out several hundred dollars.

Your '98 car already has WHIPS. All Volvos did since ~'91.

I dont agree, 'whips' was introduced -00 on S/V70, possible somewhat earlier on S80. It is a give away feature in the backrest inteded to reduce forces on the neck at a rear impact. Sips "side impact protection system" is old though, it came already on the 700-series. It is a mechanical reinforcement in the doors, seats and centre console to reduce deformation in a side collision. Then we have the side airbags which is different story..

I installed 2000 V70 seats in my 96 850. Tracks were the same. The only problem I had is that the 96 had (self contained) self triggering side airbags while 2000 used sensors. I could not retrofit the airbag portion but otherwise a direct fit.

I had to have WHIPS seats fixed once, it is a small kit from Volvo

You are correct...I confused SIPS with WHIPS. I still stand on what I said about seat replacment though.
