CEL, 'system too rich (bank 1) 850

Morning Guys and Gals:

CEL came on last night coming home from my sons house. Got the scanner out this a.m. and pulled off the code that read: "system too rich (bank 1)". Can anybody tell me what causes this. I came back from Alabama last Monday and I did notice that my mileage had fallen off from 30 to about 26. Now that the light came on last night it makes sense about the mileage drop off. Runs smooth but I can definitely smell that raw gas smell out the exhaust.

Any help with the cause would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance to all!!

Henry

If there are no other codes such as an oxygen sensor code set, your fuel pressure may be too high (defective regulator).

Or, the engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor may be out of range (not usual though - usually it would either work ok or not at all). If ECT is not working at all (open or short circuit) you should get a code for that, and I would expect the car to run poorly.

You might not get an oxygen sensor code, in case the oxygen sensor is really working ok but just trying hard toward getting the mixture back in line.

Does your engine come up to temperature (i.e. do you get good heat in the car) and does the dash temp gauge read properly? This applies especially to highway driving. If engine is running too cold for longer than the normal warmup period - bad or sluggish thermostat?

Usually, Bank 1 too rich is for the front Oxygen Sensor going out. Hope this helps. Good luck.
