SIPS deactivation before seat removal 850

Found a good donor seat to use to replace the leather on my drivers seat, but I need to remove my seat. The 96 is equipped with the SIPS and I would like any help prior to removal. Other than disconnecting the battery, are there any tricks to removing the seat without activating the SIPS????

Thank you in advance

Oliver

SIPS deactivation before seat removal - Volvo data download 850

Do just what the other 2 posts say - the SIPS on the 850 is mechanically activated, not electrically, so removing battery connection gives no protection. When doing my seatback cable I found no protective cover under the trim so I just worked carefully and stayed out of the line of fire.

There are some downloadable data on the Volvo US website describing airbag systems in the various models, which are aimed at first responders - I reached this link from the main site:

When I replaced the seat back adjusting cables on my 95, I was instructed to remove the plastic cover over the switches on the side of the seat. Underneath the cover was a plastic spacer that fit behind the plunger that activated the SIPS. There were no instructions, but the spacer fit perfectly, and would effectively keep the plunger from being depressed. It made me confortable. Good Luck!

I completely agree with Ken F. The plastic spacer is red, by the way. Haynes manual also describes this procedure. Good luck!
