2001 V70 T5 heater problems V70-XC70

Hi fellow brickboarders
I have a problem with the heater in my 2001 V70 T5.
After a while of driving the car, the a/c will, all by itself
start cranking out ice cold air with the fan turning to max.
The only way to get it back to heat mode is to turn the temperature
knobs to max and then back to the pre set temperature.
The car is equipped with the automatic A/C.
I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Check carefully if AC is indeed on. A common problem for this car has been the clogged interior temperature sensor behind those 3 slits above the passenger temp dial on the ECC. The symptoms are

    - Car blow cold air even if temp sensor is set on say 72 degrees. In my case, I was not using auto mode so AC is definitely not on. But since it is cold outside in the winter, cold air gets in. Only way to remove this condition is set to max temperature.

There is a fan behind these slits and the fan shaft gets clogged sucking in the dirt in the interior cabin after awhile (It has to create air flow over the temperature sensing wire to sense the temperature).

You can also faintly hear this fan turning for awhile after you shut the car off. When my fan was clogged, this wasn't happening. This is probably your easiest way to diagnose if this is the cause.

If this is your problem, here are a couple of links

go to vvspy.com, click V/XC70 link, click search, search for "ECC" + select "search the whole archive" (default is just 1 day), look at the thread "Problem with the airco". Sorry, I couldn't provide direct links.

To remove the ECC, follow part of this direction

Becareful removing the 2 torx screws behind the pen holder. If they drop, you've lost them forever. To clean the fan shaft, just use a cotton swab with some alcohol to clean the fan shaft and get the dirt, threads out.

That was indeed what it was.
It was full of hair and dust.
Thanks for your help, it saved me a bundle of $$.
      Regards
