Can I Put 17' Rims on My '98 V70 AWDR? V70-XC70 1998

I'm the second owner of a 1998 V70 AWDR with stock 16" rims. I would like to replace them with 17" rims. I get conflicting info from dealerships stating I can and I can't. TireRack says I can and some people I've talked to say I can't because of the rim/tire combination rubbing inside the wheelwell or scraping against internal steering parts. I would appreciate thoughts/advice on replacing them before going ahead. I would be buying Volvo rims they recommend(as V70 only - no mention of an awd system). Questions: 1. Would I be creating future problems on the drive system down the road if I replaced them? 2. Any suggestions on the lowest/widest profile tire that would suit for some comfort without giving up sporty feel and grip.
3. Why wouldn't have Volvo put 17"s on this particular model as standard equipment or wher they an option?

I would appreciate your comments-thank you; ldodsworth@rogers.com

    Can I Put 17' Rims on My '98 V70 AWDR? V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1999 V70R AWD with Volvo factory 17" Volans (from a 97 850 T5-R) and 215/45/17 tires. They fit perfectly and do not rub even with TME springs which lower the car about 1 - 1 1/2 inches. The up side is that they look great and make the car handle better. The down side is that they also make the car ride pretty harsh. Potholes will rattle your teeth. I did the springs and the wheels at the same time, so I do not know which modification affected the ride the most. My tire guy also said that it important to stay with OEM Volvo wheels or ones that are made specifically for Volvo because of the "hubcentric" design. He said that most of the non-Volvo specific wheels are imossible to keep from shaking during higher speeds and braking. I would guess that Volvo does not put 17" wheels as standard on the AWD R because they assume that you may be driving it in poor weather where the roads are less than perfect. Good Luck.
