What size brake rotors do I really have? V70-XC70 1998

Ok, I'm diving into the wonderful world of Volvo repair and need a little help. My '98 V70-T5 needs new brakes and rotors all the way around. I checked out Volvospeed and am confident I can do it, BUT, I can't figure out what size rotors I really have...I understand the best way is to measure them but that is difficult at best with them still on the car (with tires removed). I can't just take them off because I need to drive the car. The dealer gives me a part # for front (272276) that is for 302mm (he says 12 inch) while claiming that they should be 11 inch (280mm). When I used the best tool I had available to measure they look much closer to 280 than 302 but my measure stick was not the greatest and way too long for the job. I know my T-5 was manufactured in mid 97 and is all factory if that helps...

Thanks
Michael

Take a piece of wire (coat hanger, welding rod, etc.) bend it into a U and with the ends of the open U touch the top and bottom of the brake rotor.
Bend and adjust the wire ends until you have the ends of the wire touching the top and bottom of the rotor.
Measure the gap between the ends of the wire and that is the size of your rotors.

I forgot I have the following #'s from the current Volvo rotors...

    front "VOLVO 6819678 1625 4W149 MIN TH 23MM"

    rear "VOLVO 7(maybe 9)140144 1625 W222 MIN TH 8.4MM"

    Thanks again

All my pre-2001 T5s have had 280s. I assume you have 16" columba (turbine look) wheels. You can easily see the rotors and calipers through the spokes of the wheel. Do you have pretty good clearance? If yes, you have 280s. If you look at a 2001 with the 16" wheels, you'll see that you have very little clearance. Those are the 302s.
Wanna be really sure? Borrow a 15 inch wheel from an 850 or 70 series owner. If it fits on and clears, you have 280s. In fact, when I changed my shocks to Bilsteins, I "changed" to 15 inch rims, and higher profile tires. I end up with the same circumfrance (actually more in my case) and have a bigger selection of tires to choose from.

Thanks Rick, I do have those 16" rims and the room you described. I think the dealer just wanted me to spend the $150 per rotor plus pads plus labor for the information I needed. I found a local dealer who took pity on me and will allow me to exchange to the correct size if this does not work out but I am confident that you and I are correct...worst case is I have to walk 40 miles to work for a couple of days ;-)
