ETM failure - fixed under warranty ;-) V70-XC70

I live in the state of Maine and have had on and off problems with stalling with my 2000 V70 XC and my dealer in Maine replaced spark plugs and the air filter, telling me that was the source of my problem. But I was suspicious after all I had read and strongly felt that my ETS was the issue.

I was visiting my parents in Connecticut this past weekend and we were driving back from a day in New York City when sure enough, my ETS light came on while on the highway. I immediately lost acceleration power in my car and had to limp it back to my parents house at 10 miles per hour (it took us 2 hours to go 15 miles).

I called Chase Parkway Volvo in Watertown, CT the next morning and explained my situation (the ETS light, the power loss and the fact that I still had a 300 mile drive ahead of me to get back to Maine). They told me to bring my car in immediately and they replaced my throttle module within 2 hours. They even charged my cell phone up for me while I waited so that it had enough battery power for my return trip home. Their service department was OUTSTANDING. They told me that they have seen the ETS problem many times in the past few months and if a customer voices concerns over it, they automatically replace it. They don’t clean it or give the customer the runaround, they just do the right thing and replace it…UNDER WARRANTY.

I am completely satisfied with the outcome of my situation. If anyone experiences ETS failure, definitely go to Chase Parkway Volvo – they really offer superb service and will fix the ETM at no charge and with no hassles.

Re: "If anyone experiences ETS failure, definitely go to Chase Parkway Volvo"

This is great to hear. My only concern is that at 10 miles per hour, it will take me over twelve days to drive to Watertown, CT, from San Jose, CA.

I'm curious V70-XC70

There are two dealers near me, one in South Portland and the other one in Topsham. I've been doing business with the one in Topsham for over thirty years, please tell me it wasn't that one...

I bought my car at Goodwin's in Topsham but they are too far for me to service so I went to Portland Volvo where they did the plugs and filter - and probably didn't look at the ETM. Good luck with Goodwin!

You should become familiar with the ETM section of this website for more information on failures and how Volvo is handeling it. There are reports on this website and the vexedvolvo site, hosted by Don Wilson, of the replacement parts failing as early as 12,000 miles. I am glad to hear you had a good experience with your dealer. Don does discuss the computer upgrade and the failure codes at both websites. Anyone who owns one of these cars should become familiar with the underlying cause of the failure and what is being done to fix it. An ETM failure on a busy highway can be very dangerous.

I had the same experience at my dealer. I get the sense that Volvo has told the dealer service department:

1. don't bother with cleaning, just replace ETM
2. must have a failure code which points to ETM for replacement

The early phase of this problem often don't occur frequently enough to lock in a code. So #2 is still challenging for the consumers. I hope the March software update has the ability to store early failure warnings. The only other solution is to carry an OBDII reader to check the code when you first start getting "Performance Reduced" message.

I carry a code reader with me all of the time...it's invaluable to have in our Volvo's. You can buy a good one for less than $100 (I paid about $80 for mine with shipping) from ebay. Look for an Equus Innova 3100. I wonder if taking a digital picture of your code reader giving you a ETM code will suffice with the dealer? Might be worth a try, especially if you're on good terms with them.
