Oil smell and smoke

I recently brought my 1997 850 for an oil change and a brake job.

Immediately thereafter, it developed a burnt oil smell in the cabin. I seemed to have located the source from smoke that is coming from a black cap or plug type item several inches below and in front of the distributor.

What is this cap or plug?

Is this indicative of a more extensive problem?

Why would this come up at an oil change (or brake work)?

Not sure which plug you're talking about but it sounds like a vacuum hose that's part of the pcv system has worked its way off. There should be a nipple that it fits back on...maybe on the intake hose (under side) from the air filter box? Anyway, this could cause what you're describing and others will probably chime in. More specifically the location of the plug and what it looks like would be helpful.
