850 REPAIR COSTS

I am still researching the feasability of buying a good used 850 wagon. I just spoke to a Volvo specialist shop and was told that sticking brake calipers can bee a problem. Oh, easy repair I think, and then he tells me that calipers run about $800.00 per wheel. What shoild the job cost with new pads, rotors and calipers? There must be a good source for such parts.

What are the DYI'ers on this list paying to do this repair. He also about $400.00 for the 70Kmi timing belt change and maybe $700.00 the $140Kmi change which requires a tensioner. How difficult is a timing belt & tensioner change to do?

    3 volvos, 21 years - 550,000 miles - 2 stuck calipers in toto.

    Klaus' post is very pertinent. Find a car with a verifiable history of proper maintenance.

      numerous cars probably >600k miles, 3 stuck calipers - all on one 850! - what can I say i think they are prone, seems to be a common thread, perhaps it depends on climate, we get lots of salt on the road which may explain it...

      parts supppliers keep em in stock so they must be popular!

      $800 a wheel is taking the %^$^ a bit though!

    A lot of things could go wrong with a used car, Volvo or not. A sticking caliper can be greased, which it should be every pad change. If you cannot or will not do your own maintenance, these cars get very expensive. The two worst items are an evaporator leak ($1500) or a rear engine seal. The seal usually is an indicator of poor maint. practices. Every 850 will need an evap replacement, or lots of cans of R134a!
    Replacing brakes, changing oil, flushing tranny, tune up, are all simple DIY tasks. Timing belt is more complex, especially if you need to replace the tensioner and the water pump (not an easy location like the 240).
    Find a mechanic you are comfortable with before you buy a used car.

    There has been much discussion on this board concerning the mechanic making a profit, and some degree this is necessary and right, but the Volvo specialist you talked too is way to high on all that he mentioned. My suggestion is to find another indy mechanic who isn't so unreasonable.

      just cahnged oen of my rear calipers (including caliper, rear disks, pads, brake shoes etc) £200 (abought $400)...

      of course he may also be quoting labour in there...

      $800 sounds abought right for 2 calipers, disks, pads and labout (i.e. a full rebuild front or back)
