Voltage fluctuations on cold start 850 1996

Hi All,

During the recent (cold) weeks my -96 NA 855 has developed a symptom where the voltage drops briefly (less than a second) a couple of times following a cold start. Its evident in both the dash lights as well as the headlights which both fade during the drops. This is only during the first minute after cold start and everything else is working normally.

One theory I have is that my alternator isn't delivering enough and that there are some self tests (ABS maybe?) going on drawing enough electricity to cause the drops.

Any input or theories is greatly appreciated
TIA
/Johan

I have this same issue on my 98 V70, but mine also occurs sometimes when leaving a highway and entering into city traffic. Strange...I thought it was the air pump trying too hard to draw since it's siezing up. Curious to hear what yours turns out to be.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think my air pump is in good condition. Changed it this summer (full of water :-)) along with a new relay and that valve thingy. Shouldn't you get a CEL if your pump is seized?

I'll post back if I come up with a solution.

      /Johan

I do have a CEL...I'm going to unplug the air pump and see what happens with this dimming light issue. I'm starting to think it's not the air pump, though.

My car generally only does this in the morning when it's cold, and then it happens intermittantly when I exit the highway and enter traffic (this is the part that makes me think it's not the air pump.) For at least a minute, the lights will dim almost as if the A/C kicked on, then bright again the next second, then dim for a second, and on and on...

I have no trouble starting the car. This condition is not affected by how many electrical loads are running (I could have both heated seats on, blower on high, wipers, rear defrost, foot on the brakes OR have nothing on at all but the DRLs.)

If an alternator will fix it, I'll slap one in there but it just seems more involved than that for some reason.

Good luck...I'm going to try to eliminate as many sources as I can and hopefully nail the problem down.

I unplugged my secondary air pump this weekend and the headlight dimming problem has not resurfaced. I don't think this would be the cure for the member that started this thread, but it worked for me. I had a CEL from a bad pump anyway, so no harm in disconnecting it. Thanks!

That first minute is diagnostic time for the mechanical engine parts. Your AC will cycle once, among other power robbing devices. I wouldn't worry toooooo much.

      Thanks Klaus.
I don't. Actually I run with AC turned off due to a noisy compressor (will look into that when it gets warmer). Probably my alternator is wearing out (do they do that?)

      Cheers

There are very few posts of 850 and newer models with altenator problems until they go over 150K miles (240Km). If your oil is heavier than 5W30 and you park outside all night, that might explain why your engine slows down when it is going through it's checklist. What is your rpm at startup, it should be around 1000? You just might need a tune up: plugs, wires, timing check.
I just started my V70... The headlights flicker when the ECC turns the inside fan on for a few seconds. The heated seats were also on and the AC was off. The garage temperature is about 5C.

Yes, from your description it does sound like an alternator issue. The self test takes place right around 18-20 mph and is in the area of 1 second. All it does is cycle the pump motor but how much current it draws to do this is anybody's guess. If your alt is dipping like that you might want to throw a volt mete on it and check it out while duplicating and be ready to hang a new one. If it comes down to a new alternator do yourself a favor and stuff in a Bosch rebuilt, they are worth the money and let's face it, how many times do you really want to put that alternator in?

Thanks for your suggestions Mark. I'll make sure to get a good replacement part if it turns out I need to go down that route.
Haven't done an alternator switch myself so I'll have to consult my Haynes to see if I'll give it a try or leave it to my local indy.

      Cheers

Aside from the one pain in the ass bolt that you need to come from under the manifold with a long extension and a wobbly socket to get to they are not too bad. I just blow the p/s pump out of the way and then pull the alt. As I recall you pretty much end up turning the accesory mount bracket that it all mounts to loose in the process.
