Very noisy IAC motor 850 1995

My daughter has been having a harder and longer time to start the car. So I checked the codes this morning and came up 1-1-1 everywhere. She just turned 90K miles and is in need of an oil change, which will be done tomorrow.
When I turned the key to pos II, a loud buzzing sound came from the Idle Air Controler motor. This is NOT normal.
Should I replace the motor, is there a cleaning I could do? The car idles fine after it is started. It now takes 5-7 long seconds to start the car, used to be 2-3.

Is the IAC running in a different way than before, to compensate for something else wrong which would tend to prevent proper idling speed - such as dirty or sticking throttle linkage, ignition issue, etc? Doesn't the IAC usually stay in one position or change slowly, rather than changing rapidly (as would be suggested by a buzzing sound)?

If it wasn't so darned cold in the garage, I would clean out the TB and the valves/hoses in the IAC. I hope it wwill wait until spring...

        Hey Klaus,

You'll have to turn loose of some them hard earned $$$ and put some heat out there. Then you can mess with them bricks year round. Made myself a propane salamander years ago for about $5.00 in junk parts and a half days time. Run you out of my garage when it's in the teens outside. Only problem is the noise...roars like a jet engine.

I took the cover off and the noise almost went away. $%^# plastic parts! But I still don't know why the IAC motor is running with the key in pos II and the car not started. Is this normal? It's raining out so I can't check the V70 for the same thing. I just do not remember ever hearing the IAC before.

      Klaus,

Is this motor behind the passenger's side headlight near the firewall? I have a noise coming from that area that sounds like what you are describing. On my '95 850 Turbo, the noise is there when the ignition switch is in position II (motor not running) and is also there after the car is started. I haven't noticed any difference in the time to start the engine. However, my car did not make this sound until I got back from a three week vacation (car was parked at the house the whole time). I started the car to run it for a little while when I returned and noticed the noise then, and it still is there one month later.

On a related note, I really need to by a good manual for this car. Does Bentley publis one?

The IAC is just infront of the throttle body, under the plastic cover for the accellerator cables.
I just checked my 95, and cannot find any vibration coming from behind the headlight. Besides, my IAC is humming so much, I can't tell if anything else is making noise. I know it never made that much noise before. My 98 is quiet.
I looked at my almost worthless Haynes manual, no mention of anything behind the pass headlight. My green book for the 164 at least has pictures and drawings of everything in the engine bay, with every part labled! I really don't need two chapters devoted to rebuilding and engine.

        Thanks Mark,
Its just that I never heard the IAC before. When I took the plastic cover off, the motor still hummed and I thought it strange that it was running eventhough the engine had not been started yet. I have to check the tie down strap tension to make sure it hasn't gotten old and cracked. Awful noise.
Without the cover, it just quietly humms.

I noticed this myself about the IAC motor a couple months ago when the 94 855T had a bad cam shaft position sensor. I was surprised how loud it was and at first thought that was my problem. I never noticed it before on the R but checked it after the 94 issue and sure enough they both do the same thing!
