heater core 850 1996

I am smelling the faint scent of antifreeze when I first start up in the morning. A tech friend of mine tells me it is probably the heater core. I understand that the area where aluminum core is "glued" to plastic is where it usually leaks. It is a slow leak now.

I just spent 2/3 of my annual 850 repair budget ($1000) on brakes and spring seats etc. I need to save up for this repair and the inevitable evaporator replacement in my future(ok for now-amazing as it sounds).

Can I replace my heater core at home, or is this, like the evaporator, better left to a tech?

Dan

The 850 Heater core is very accessible and easy to remove. Access is through the kick panels on the center console. The bottom of the housing is attached with a few screws and the pipes are sealed with o-rings and 1 screw. New core is around $130.

Thanks very much for you information. I will give it try.

I neglected to mention,in my initial post, that I attended a dealer sponsered "free" service clinic recently. I asked the service rep to estimate the cost of heater core replacement and/or evaporator replacement.

      Heater core replacement: $1000

      Evaporator replacement: $2000

The dealer's stated flat rate for labor is $100 per hour. I may be getting old and out of touch with prices, but aren't those prices a little high?

I don't understand. It takes 14-16 hours to remove and replace the dash and about 2 hours for the glovebox. Why is the heater core so high? And the evaporator is about $500 too much.
