Any '98 70 Series owners with auto-dim rearview mirror installed?

Hi,

I am interested in installing the auto-dim mirror on my '98 S70.

However, I am told that only MY '99 cars and later were wired to accept the mirror. Jon, at Borton Volvo, advised me that the ECU won't override the dimming function when reverse is engaged for the '98's.

How did you install the unit in your '98?

Thanks,
Bryan

No, not on the Volvo, but have you driven a car with one at night?

I have one on my Acura and if that were the standard mirror and someone invented the old-style manual "flip up" mirror, I'd say the latter was a vast technological improvement.

Between the HIDs and the mirror sometimes I think I'm having flashbacks to my 1960s college days.

      BtC,

There is one in my brother-in-law's Lexus. I thought it worked pretty well.

I heard that Volvo's is made by Donnelly, who makes most of them.

The stock mirror is loose at the pivot and bounces around from road vibration. I am told that it cannot be repaired. The price is +/- $140.00. So, $45.00 looks like a deal.

I wish someone could tell me if the '98 has the connector as part of the factory harness. There IS an unused connector. But, being an early build S70, it could be for the remote locking receiver--its location on the 850's.

Not sure I appreciate the flashback reference. I do remember being sure that my Toyota Celica, with a "trip-computer" and 'full range stereo" was the epitomy of automobile sophistication.

      Anyway, thanks for the response.

      Bryan

I bought the one from Borton's and insalled it in my '98 S70...works a charm. I wouldn't leave home without it now. It is an easy insall...only have to wire it in the lower wiring harness under the knee bolster under the steering column. I, personally think it's a vast improvement over what was there...I drive on the interstate at night almost as a daily event and love it, especially when the trucks get behind me with their brights. I believe there's a write-up on the install with pictures...will have to look for it. It's a good deal from Borton's and I love my auto-dim mirror so much that I sold my original one.

          MIJ,

          Thanks for the response.

Is there a connector on the harness for the mirror or did you have to tap into a power & ground wire?

I'd really like to add this feature.

You use a ground wire out of the relay harness under the knee bolster on the driver's side. I can found the write-up but it's saved on my computer. Emailing it to you.

              MIJ,

I installed the mirror today and it's great!

The Swenglish instructions were fairly straight forward. The illustration of the location for the blue wire in the connector IS confusing. But, your advice avoided any problems.

I spent several minutes in the driveway switching from N to R to watch the mirror go from dark to light. What can I say--give me a 4 color pen and I can amuse myself for hours.

              Thanks again,
              Bryan

Hey, Bryan...glad it worked for you and my instructions helped you avoid the wire issue...I struggled through that one so added it to the instructions I picked up. If anyone else wants to do this, just hit me with an email and I'll send you the instructions.

A subscriber named rtparr on this board documented the whole step from what I can recall back in late 2004.

I drove some hugh monster on a business trip a while back and rather liked the dimming feature. Installe don on my 95 GLT and have been grinning like a bandit ever since.
