'97 850 won't pass emissions due to lack of data... help! 850 1997

Hi,

my boyfriend's mom owns a '97 850 that has failed emissions twice due to a "not complete" result on the "non-continuous" monitor tests from the OBD. there missing data include: catalytic system, evap system, O2 sensor, and "overall readiness".
The car failed the same test a month or two ago, and the tech said that it was due to the battery being replaced recently. however, the car has been driven hundreds of miles since then, with the same incomplete test data results. i dont own a scanner, so i can only go by what the readout says. one curiousity is that the "continuous" test data i.e. misfire, fuel system, connector, and communication readings all pass as normal. the obd keeps sending back the result of "not ready" and incomplete. is there a particular weak point associated with this model/year, or perhaps the power is not routed correctly to the unit to keep its memory?? i have no clue. is anyone familiar with this problem? if so, please help!

sincerely,

carissa spatcher

'97 850 won't pass emissions due to lack of data... help! 850 1997

Is it a turbo 850? Some early OBDII Volvos have problems with the readiness tests. This is a complex deal invented by the EPA to try and solve the problem of people clearning trouble codes right before a smog test.

There have been many articles written about these problems.

    See:

    http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ftp/pdfdocs/APPENDIX_J.pdf

It could be worse, like the VW models where replacing the radio with an aftermarket unit can result in damaged scan tools!

I can't find the post, but someone implied that for 96&97 models, when you turn the car off, some of the codes are lost, not stored. Then when you drive, the ECU reposts them.
Consensus, do not turn off the car when you get to the testing station.

You might want to verify this with your local dealer, or Volvousa,

Did she get a CEL for any of the systems involved and have any repairs done recently? If so, there is a "drive cycle" associated with each OBD II code which is a certain milage/time that needs to pass after a repair and a code reset to prove the problem was actually corrected. This prevents one from simply resetting the CEL and running the car thru inspection. There is a link here somewhere that tells what the DC is for certain repairs. You can do a search or one of the other guys probably knows what it is.

Here is the Readiness Drive Cycle for passing Emissions 850 1997

Hopefully this will help. This is the driver's readiness spoken about earlier. Do 2 of these drive cycles.

Some of the earlier cars will reset the monitors everytime you shut the car off so it can be a major pain in the rear to get one through smog. You can try doing a couple of drive cycles in it to get it to reset the monitors but if you have already driven it a couple of hundred miles and they have not reset I would say that the odds are against it, but still give it a try anyhow as you have nothing to loose. You have to have all but two of the monitors up currently. So regardless of how many your particular car has you need to have all but two of them up to pass that part of the test, at least here in So. Cal that is the way it is. If your monitors will not set then you need to take it for a long drive and then bring it in for a smog and do not shut the vehicle off until it is performed. I had one of these last week and that was exactly what was needed.
