driver's seat heater 850 1996

I've read through old posts but I'm not finding the answers I'm looking for.

The facts:

Driver's side heat seater stopped working abruptly. Passenger side still works fine.
Found the "red wire" broken under driver's seat. New clip put on. When trying to reconnect the wires, I inadvertently pulled out the white plastic disc that inserts into the seat cushion. I reinserted it. Subsequent test with voltmeter shows no power to the seat heater wires.
My mechanic states that I need a new relay. Are there separate relays for the L/R side?
My car did have the seat heater recall repair work completed in 2003.

So is the relay a likely culprit?
If so, where is it located under the dash?

I live in Vermont and heated seats aren't so much a luxury...

Thanks in advance.

I guess you missed it in his original posting, but the heater recall was already done 2 years ago on the car in question.

I looked it up in VADIS and see no designation for either a fuse or relay for the front heaters although there is a relay for the rear seat heaters (if your car comes with them). All indications are that the seat belt and the heater on whichever side (passenger or driver) are paired together and run through the door jam with a connector. This would mean that the heater in the seat not having any power would also cause the seatbelt clasp to loose power as well. Do you have an indicator on the dash for a seatbelt being disconnected? I would check the thermostat. You could have pulled a wire loose when you pushed it back into the seat. I know this isn't much help, but maybe this will set you in the right direction.

      Relays... 850 1996

If the pass seat heater has a relay, then the driver's must have one. And why would the wires go to the door? There is nothing in the door for seats or belts.
I found a relay chart once, for an 850, but I can't remember where I found it. It does exist, and it is not in a Haynes manual - where there should be one!

        Relays... 850 1996

You are correct...should be in the Haynes manual...also couldn't find it in VADIS...only information is that the wires pass through the door connector to the front where the fuse box is??

          Relays... 850 1996

I have the wiring diagram for the 850 for the heated seat circuit (I fixed my 95 850 last month).

The seat heaters are fused (#11/26 and 11/28). Check this up under the hood in the main fuse box.

You mentioned that you pulled the disc out of the seat pad - are you certain that your thermostat is wired back up? When I did this, it took me a couple tries to get it right. If your thermostat is not back in the circuit, you'll get no power to the heating element.

Are you getting power out of the switch on the console? (Is this the relay your mechanic is talking about?) Other than the thermostat "relay", there are no other relays in the wireing diagram.

I'd hazard a guess your thermostat clip you added to the red wire has come off the thermostat.

            Relays... 850 1996

The wires are definitely connected and getting good contact, and I've tried to get that white disc back up into the seat to the best of my abilities. I don't feel anything up inside the hole, so I'm assuming that it just comes into contact with the heating element once it's shoved up there properly...?

I'm not sure about power aroudn the switch; the indicator light illuminates in the seat heat switch when it's turned on.

The fuses seem fine. The seat heaters share a fuse with the power mirrors, and those are working fine.
