460 no restart, help! 400

Hi! I live in Colombia and own a 1994 460SE. Was I out of luck, or is this a crappy car? I recently found out that my engine was built by renault, WHY??? Anyway, when my car warms up, it is almost impossible to restart it immediately. I'll have to wait for about 30-40 minutes (usually with the hood open) so that it will start again. Once running, everything is 'OK'... By the way, is there any cheap mod to help this car's underpowered engine get a little faster? Anyone has/had this car? What were your common problems and how did you fixed them? Your help is highly appreciated, as the Volvo shop in my country hasn't been able to fix it, while getting richer with my monthly visits!

I don't usually visit this forum, but first spotted your question over in the 444-544 area. Also, I do not own, nor have I ever driven, a 460 SE. However, the problem you describe is an exact duplicate of a problem I had with another Volvo, in this case a 240. The fix for that car (discovered after many visits to the shop) was the fuel pump located inside the fuel tank.

There is a K and N filter available for your car. This is the first place to start. It's worth about 5 to 10 hp and will also save fuel. It also pays for itself as you never have to change an air filter again. After that their will be an option to change the exhaust (you might have to get one custom made as there are few 400 series cars in North America) but again 5 to 10 hp gain. The rule os about 7% improvement is the maximum you will see from either of these and average of about 10% for both. Ten percent may not seem like much but the car doesn't weigh that much and the throttle response will improve as well. Any other parts will have to come from europe so feel free to search over there. Because the engine is also used in Renaults there should be a chip out there. You can also try changing the spark plugs to Iridium. You may find a difference with this but it isn't huge. Maybe a couple of ponies. Good luck.

The reason the engine was rebuilt by renault is because that is another Peugot/Renault/Volvo joint engines. What is the sevice history of this car has it had a tune up recently? If not, now is the time as moisture can cause problems. It sound like there is a problem with a bad connection caused by a small crack that forms when hot. Have you found out if there is spark and fuel? You must not have one of them as the car would otherwise start. I encountered a problem like this one and it turned out to be a bad computer. The car would not start when you tried to restart after about one to two hours. After that it would start and run fine. Turned out to be a crack or bad solder connection in the computer. When it was hot it was fine but sometime during the cooling off period it would loose it conection and then after it fully cooled off the connection would be made again.
