Tailgate ajar light / indicator always on V70-XC70 1998

Hello All! I have a 98 V70 GLT with ~105k. My tailgate ajar indicator light (on dash) is on all the time. The tailgate appears to be latching properly. I had my local indy give it a once over, and he thought it was the wiring in the tailgate. Before I let him at it for $80/hour, I thought I might give it a try. I installed the tailgate rattle kit from the dealer 2 years ago... which worked for about a month. The tailgate molding is loose on one side.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to begin?

Thanx!
UpNorthFam

P.S. Slamming the tailgate does not help... but makes me feel better.

Mine failed under the original warranty, I recall that the latch was replaced (the switch is internal to the latch) and that the part wasn't cheap.

Considering that the other 4 doors on the car don't have "door ajar" warning lights, have you considered just bypassing the switch, rather than replacing it?

I haven't researched the side doors. But after talking to my mechanic, he agrees its likely the tailgate latch.

I was hoping this was an easy (and maybe even cheap) fix that I could perform... but I now realize I was once again overly optimistic and handed over the fix to my indie :(

Thanx again for all the help!

I appologize for the late answer. I just went and checked my tailgate. It could be the micro switch in the latch assembly. Make sure your interior light close to the tailgate is on after you open the tailgate. Then take a screw driver and close the latch, it should click twice. If the inside light turns off, then the micro switch is OK. Now close the door and check the inside light. If it is still on, the latch is not working properly.
I wrapped the U bolt on the bumper/body with electrical tape a long time ago, about 10 layers. The rattles were driving me nuts! If your molding is loose, consider buying a roll of carpet tape (2 sided) and cutting it a little narrower than the molding. Tape it down to the paint and then press the molding to the tape.
I also had a rattle because the door wasn't tight enough. I found a very thick double sided tape and put it on the body of the car where the molding touches, all the way down the side and across the bottom. I then covered that with colored electrical tape - no more rattles.
    I hope I helped,

Klaus - Sorry for the delay in trying your diagnostics.

My rear tailgate light stayed on when I manually closed the latch with the screwdriver. Based on your e-mail, is it the microswitch that needs replacement? And if yes, would you happen to know the microswitch name or part number?

      Thanx!

Never having mine apart, I don't know the part number. If you had your tailgate cover off once before, it won't be hard to take it off again :)
You will need to remove the plastic cover around the latch to find the switch. And buy a couple of extra plastic fasteners from the dealer. While at the dealer, you could ask to look at the explosion diagram and see how it is put together. I am afraid the dealer will want to replace the whole thing.
Your car is too new to have the wire break at the hinge. Perhaps you can just bend the switch to fit.
