Buying a 2006 S40 or S60 2006

Getting ready to purchase a 2006 S40 or S60 AWD. Currently own an 84 240GL and a 93 240 Wagon, so this is new to me. How is this 5 cylinder turbo motor been holding up? I have no experience on turbo. Are they difficult to maintain, and what type of maintenance is required? Why do they require premium fuel? Any options I should explore? How do they compare with BMW and Mercedes comparable models as far as performance?

Thank You,
Eric Schmidt

The 5 cylinder and turbo are a great combination and quite durable. Forget the S40 (the Honda civic is much better). The S60 came from the 850/70 series and is good. AWD will rob you of a lot of 0-60 speed on dry pavement and about 2mpg overall. Premium is only needed if you have a lead foot and a high pressure turbo.
