Auxilary Belt Replacement 850 1996

Two years ago, I bought the 850 with 110k km. The service records showed that the auxilary drive belt was replaced at 90k km (by dealer). At the moment, the car is at 129k km - and in accordance to the Haynes manual, the auxillary belt must be changed again (after 32k kms). However the owner's manual recommends relying solely on the dealer for the correct mileage (recommended kms aren't given). There is a clear discrepancy between a change after 90k km and 32k km. What is your opinion - is it time to change the belt, or should I wait until 180k km? Advice is appreciated.

I would replace it when you replace the timing belt since you have to take it off anyway.

Rule308 is SO correct. A new aux belt every 32,000Km? Wow, that seems to be over kill. If we replace ours at 30,000 miles in the USA, we are probably close to over kill.
Remember, if the belt should break, you will loose power steering and altenator. You will easily make it to the next service station or home if it is in daylight hours and the lights are off. It is easy to replace and reasonably cheap. You could be like an old VW beetle owner and just buy one and keep it next to your spare tire.

I deal in miles and not km so I could not tell you what all of your intervals mean there but let me just state that when the white engines first came out in '92 Volvo called out a 60,000 mile auxillary belt change and most people did not do it for a couple of reasons. 1) someone had already done the thing and it was darn near like new anyhow or 2) it was still in decent shape and did not need changing and could be done for little to no labor when the T-belt was changed out at 70K. The dealership I was working for at the time was a real "by the book" kind of place and even they immediately quit handing the belts out on 60K services as for the most part it just unneccesarily ran the bill up. Take a look at your belt, is it cracked all to hell and gone, does it squeal like a pig when it is cold in the morning? If the answer to these questions is no then I would be inclined to not replace it until the darn thing needed it and keep your hard earned money in your pocket just a little bit longer.

Okay, thankyou all for the information. Clearly the next change should be at around 120000miles (190k km) which leaves plenty of time.

      Thanks, OTK
