Posting again: WEIRD STARTING problem 850 1996

My sister's non-turbo wagon is giving her issues still. Here's what she writes:

"Five days – didn't start three times.
The blinkers go on, both of them, no sputtering, no nothing. About 40 minutes later it starts fine again."

She turns the key, the car blinks but doesnt crank.

Any ideas? I was thinking ignition switch or some relay maybe??

If the engine doesn't turn over AND the blinkers turn on, it could be the security system. Have her try locking the car and unlocking again and see if that helps. She should check her trunk and make sure it is completely closed, same with the doors and hood.
If she has a bunch of junk on her key chain, that could put stress on the lock and ignition switch. Tell her to keep it simple.

I agree with Klaus. It sounds like the security system. If you don't hear the alarm going off, open the hood, and the "horn" it uses is directly above the engine hanging off the firewall. You can't miss it. Either tighten the "cone" by turning it like a nut, or unlpug the electrical connector and hook it up to your multimeter and see if that fires. This will simply confirm once and for all that it's the alarm.

The Alarm LED is located on the top of the dash, forward and in the middle. You should see it if you look at the tip if the driver side windsheild wiper. When the alarm is armed, it will go solid for 4 seconds, then go off and flash every 4 seconds. When the alarm is tripped, it will go solid while the flashers blink. If you get out, lock-then unlock-then lock the driver's door, if it has been tripped then the led will flash quickly for a while. Also note that if it's the alarm, the flashers will come on when the idiot lights come on, the sound will come from deep in the dash, and turning on the regular hazard switch will result in some potentially psychodellic strobes.

To do some rudimentary diagnostics on the alarm, stand at the driver's side front tire and watch the LED as she gets into the car and does her routine with pauses so you can watch the LED.

If the alarm isn't armed before she trips it, it could be the immobilizer (smart key).

If the LED lights when she closes the door, it could be the lock sensor. Suspecting it, unlock the door (once) to get in, then reach around and unlock the rear driver side door, and see if it locks when she closes the door.

      I hope this helps.

Clean the ground connection on the body in front of the battery if you haven't already done so. (Make sure battery connections are clean too.)
