Other than going to a dealer, is there a way to turn off the service message on my '04 Volvo S80. I had it serviced at the dealer until the last service when they were to replace something and did not.

    I was going to post a method, but the only one I have for '02's and on is already posted below. It works for my wife's '04 V70...maybe for your S80 too.
    Let us know one way or another.

    I don't know if this works on a 2004, but I found out how to reset my 2000 and was given these instructions for 2002 on:

    -Ignition Position I
    -Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
    -Ignition Position II
    Note! Turn the key to position II with 2 seconds
    -Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original value has been reset
    Note!For all vehicles 2003 model year a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.
    -Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has been successful.
    -If the tripmeter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
    Note! If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the SRI is not reset.

    It is interesting to note that last year's Consumer Reports ratings on dealer satisfaction had Volvo at the top and Toyota at the bottom, even though they hate Volvos and love Toyotas. This year they do not list satisfaction...I guess Toyota did poorly again.

    Give your dealer another chance and ask them to put a note on your account to be sure to reset your service light at every service.

    If you are a unhappy customer, you are doing them a favor by leaving, a dealership is not a living thing, so you cannot punish it.

    The techs are human and make mistakes. Your best bet is to learn what you have to do to get your due, try to communicate everything, point out their errors, and get what you want.

    I always check their work, a few services ago they forgot to change the cabin filter in one of my cars, they corrected the problem and gave me two extra filters.

    They have a certain budget to correct errors and they get a bonus if they can show a certain level of customer satisfaction. Get your share of that budget.

    You do not need to always need to go to the dealer for work, but you should maintain a decent relationship while your brick is under warranty.

      I guess I should give you some background information. I am a retired Volvo service tech. I am very knowledgeable of what happens in the service dept. of a dealership. The only reason I have taken in my wife's S80 is that in came with free service until about 30k. I have put well over 1,000,000 miles on Volvos since 1967, and I have serviced them all myself. I have had nothing but Volvos as my personal transportation until about two years ago when I purchased a 2004 Toyota Camry from a my son's dealership. I did so because I feel that for the money the Camry is the best buy. No matter what Consumer's report may say, the Camry has a better track record than the Volvo. One does not need a degree from MIT to service a Camry. For example, I wanted to turn off the running lamps on the S80 and Volvo wanted to charge me $75 to reprogram the computer. With the Camry it is just an extra turn on the light stalk. With the Camry resetting the service light is as simple as holding in the trip odometer button while turning on the ignition switch. Volvo has designed their autos so that you NEED to go to the dealer for service. As far as I am concerned that should be illegal. If Volvo does not come out with a more fuel effecient auto in the next few years I think their sales are going to go south. One thing Volvo had going for it for so long was the fact that it was the safest auto on the road, but not any more. Others have caught up with it. Now with Ford calling a lot of the shots, Volvo is going to be just another choice among many. The new generation is not going to have any conception of the "brick" that it once had.

        Those words can be repeated by most of us on this board. I refuse to buy a new Volvo. They even extended the splash pan so that it is hard to change the oil filter, much less tie every electrical component to the ECU.
        Some of us have just covered the service light with black tape.

    Sorry, dealer has to turn it off. But you are under warranty, so should not be a problem. Just call them first, don't just drive in and start complaining.
