I have a 96 turbo wgn . The service engine light has been on for quite sometime.Lat weekend i attempted to exstinguish it with the alex pepper program but it found no codes stored. Any advice am I missing something? Is it possible that this is the the light that comes on as a sevice reminder rather than due to a fault code. If so can this program reset it.

Alex Peper's software will reset the service light on 96-97 850's. Open the program and click on "status". With the status page open, click on "enhanced". You'll get a dialoge box "Reset Service light". Click "clear" and presto, it's off.

I tried the suggestions that you gave me for resetting the service engine light on my 96 850-T. I did not find a "reset service engine light" prompt
after clicking on "enahanced" .Did you you down load volvo specific updates? Any other advice?

Try clicking "status" first and then click "enhanced". Status needs to be on screen before clicking enhanced. Hope it works. Just did it on our 96 850

You need a Draper tool for the '96 850. They're on Ebay all the time. Here's one for less than $100 with a couple of Mann oil filters.

Last time I asked the maker of the program you have, I was told that it could not reset the service light.

Just an update on my response above - I asked the maker of the program specifically about my '98 S70 and the answer was that it would not reset the '98 service light. I don't know whether the program can reset the service light on other models/years.

Pepper program will shut reset service lights. have done it many times on 96 and newer 850's.

You can't reset the light using Dr. Pepper. (only check engine light)
What you need to do is go under the hood and do that little jumper cable exercise by punching in the correct code. (your light probably came on as a reminder to change your oil.)
You can find instructions on resetting on Bay 13. Takes about 2 minutes.

With his late model year 850, there is no black junction box to reset anything with. He needs a Draper reset tool. I bought one from eBay for about $60...if none there now, keep looking. However, as another poster said, it's no big deal...just a reminder that it's time for your service...a way for the dealer to make more $$ off of you. You can ignore it with no problem, put black tape over it, take the dash out and pull the light bulb out, or reset it with a tool like I mentioned above.

the service reminder light is just a reminder, nothing is wrong with the car, there are no codes, and should turn off by itself within a couple of minutes.
