S60 Tire Selection affecting ABS? S60 2003

We purchased our 2003 S60 with Pirelli 235/45 R17s -- low profile tires with the alum. hubs. They look good, but we've had nothing but problems, especially when the weather turns cold -- they just go flat. Service center says the hubs contract in the cold and the seal breaks. (This doesn't sit well with me, but whatever...) Anyway, we're now looking at purchasing new tires and was told by the Volvo dealer that we can't replace the current set with more of a touring tire (higher profile) because the "car's ABS was programmed for the 235/45 R17s and if you put a different size tire on the ABS won't work properly." I can see how this might be an issue, but need some outside validation. Is this true? If so, can the car's ABS be re-programmed? Thanks in advance.

- Dave

The ABS story you were told is exactly ... a BS story.

The question is whether you wish to keep the same hubs and use higher profile tires, that is whether you have enough room in there. Our '95 850T came with 50R16s and we have been driving it with 55R16s for the last 100k miles without any problem. In your case, check the dimensions of the wheel space around your wheels and not any kind of ... ABS reprogramming. Good luck!

My BS meter is pegged off the scale!

I have 17s on my Acura -- actually I have on the 16s with the snow tires and I'm going to get them swapped off in about 20 minutes -- I'm not a fan of 17s in an area with potholes and frost heaves.

But I've not had problems like you have. The tires (Michelins) hold air just fine.

I'm also no fan of Pirellis, I had them on my first Saab -- NEVER again!

Try a different shop and see if they can find what's leaking? Maybe the rims were bent? Bent installing the tires?

Sounds like BS to me - more like a traction control issue than an ABS issue. But you are going to have a problem going to a higher profile tire with 17 inch rims - just not enough room. But go back to a 15 or 16 inch wheel and you'll have plenty of choices for 55, 60 or even 65 profile. Base S60s came with 195/65 tires on 15 inch wheels for example. This trend towards 40 to 50 profile tires is just about the craziest thing that ever was.

Deanyel - Thanks for your insight and for the education. I didn't even think to consider the limitations due to the size of the rims. Be well. - Dave
