Bad oil trap cause engine to stall? 850

Have a 94 850 non-turbo. In January came back from holidays car had not been started for two weeks when tried would not start. Read through posts on the Brickboard. Was finally able to get the engine to start but would die when driven. Disconnected the hoses from the Idle Control Value and was able to drive but very poorly. Ended up replacing the Idle Air Control Value and the relay (runs both the fuel pump and the IACV). I first replaced the Idle Control Value after which it started right up and ran great. A week later since I had already ordered the relay I put the new relay in. Everything was good until today. Wife started today ok, drove a few miles and engine died. Believe at this point when she tried to restart engine was flooded. I held throttle up but could not get the engine to run. So I thought maybe vacuum leak from EGR or Vapor Canister or other so I disconnected and blocked off all vacuum leads going to the intake manifold. It was then when I was disconnecting and blocking the hoses that I noticed that the hose with the flame trap was dripping oil. I took off the air supply hose from the air cleaner I found that the exterior of the hose was wet with oil as well as the inside, which was also wet with oil. The aluminum throttle chamber and plate (both sides) also had oil on it. So I used carburetor cleaner to clean out the oil in the chamber and carb cleaner and WD-40 to clean out the IACV. I then looked at my oil level and it is down a quart of oil from the last oil change one month ago. I have taped the inlet hole and left unattached the flame trap. Having done this engine starts right up and runs/drives good. I plan to leave off the flame trap hose (which has gas coming out when engine running) and put a Ziplock bag (with opening to let pressure out) to see how much oil comes out. In doing research I find that the flame trap is connected to the OIL TRAP. So the question is could a defective oil trap cause the engine to stall and not restart? Or is it a vacuum leak through the EGR or Vapor Canister or other? If I am able to hook up all the hoses and the engine starts and runs good and I get oil in the Ziplock then I think it is the Oil Trap. If so how do I fix it? Thanks for the help! BDV

Bad oil trap cause engine to stall? 850

    1) On my 850 I attend to the flame trap and its tubings every year or so. Whenever I have opened things up, I have found that a fair amount of oil has accumulated throughout the intake air pathway, like you saw. I clean it just as you did. Evidently lots of oil that blows by or is otherwise pushed out of the crankcase is making its way to the intake system. This is a good thing, since the pressure is at least not going toward damaging oil seals. In my experience this is getting worse as engine accumulate miles. It would also be lots worse if the oil separator becomes blocked (so that liquid oil can't drain by gravity down into the crankcase).

    2) In my experience on Volvo and other cars if the oil rebreathing system is not intact (no leaks and no clogs allowed) the engine will perform less than perfectly in one way or another - oil usage, poor idling, stalling, or whatever. Sounds like it would be worth a physical inspection of all the components - as I plan to do soon on mine.

A recent post gave a link to inspection/replacement of oil separator which is described on volvospeed.com.
