Fuel Tank System Leak - Purge Valve Failure S70 1998

Check engine light came on and took my s70t5a to the dealer. this is what they came up with:

"Found Code EFI-611 Fule Tank System Large Leak Permanent Fault, I began fault tracing by erasing the dtc and performing a fuel tank quick test. I fougn the system failed and the code returned. I verified that gas cap is secured properly and found no signs of damage to the evap system hoses. I did notice excessive debris in the purge line filter indicating the canister has deteriorated. As a result the charcoal particles have become trapped in the purge valve causing it not to seal properly (sic?) resulting the DTC being set."

Question is, do I need to fix this? Also, I've driven the car three times since getting the above report from the dealer and the check engine light has not come back on. Thoughts???
