What shocks do I need for a 1998 V70 AWD? I'm confused! *help?* V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

I need to replace the shocks on the wife's 1998 V70 AWD and I'm quite confused as to which ones I need. Everywhere I seem to look for shocks (online) they all seem to say "not for AWD". I would like shocks of similar ride/value as the OEM ones. I know if I put stiffer ones in there that she won't like it.

Anybody done this task? What did you buy? Where? Was it really that hard to accomplish the maintenance? I'm still not sure if I'm going to do the work or farm it out. I'll probably end up doing it though.

Anyways, there it is. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

-Chris

I think the front shocks are the same as the front drive version of the 850/70 series from 1994 to 2000, but the rears are different....whether nivimat or not. The wheels are the same....the fromt rotors are the same....but the back rotors are different too. let us know what you do.

When they say "not for AWD" they mean, not for vehicles with Nivomatic rear shocks. Look at your rear shocks. If they're a little less than 3" in diameter, then you have nivomats and, as far as I know, their is no alternative for our cars when it comes to nivomats. If you really need them then prepare to pay a bunch for them at the dealer but they work very well. The general consensus in the Volvo owners world is to stick with the nivomats. For your front struts, I'd take MIJ's advice to go with shox.com.

If you've never replaced struts before, then prepare to spend more than a few hours. While you're there, consider replacing the strut mounts as they all have a tendency to break and creak. You'll also need a set of spring compressors to get the struts out. Totally worth it to buy them if your going to do your own maintenance. I'm betting you can do it. Good Luck!

      Hi there

If I'm understanding correctly: Nivomatic rear shocks are for AWDs, right? because I'm planning to buy a '98 V70 AWD and the seller told me that rear shock left side need to be replaced.($305 at FCP Groton, yuck) The car is lower on the left side by few inches and he said that it will cure that problem too. Does it makes sense?
and is it a DIY job?

I own 2 regular 850s and I'm doing all the repairs on both: timing belt, water pump, front strut, front bearing hub, brakes, ect, ect but I'm not familiar at all with the AWD ones

      Thx a bunch

I'd give www.shox.com a call. They are cheaper, fast and reliable. This is where I get most of my suspension parts: 1-800-683-2890

Fyi, I am also trying to figure out what shocks/struts I can purchase [online] for my '00 XC70 AWD SE. I looked to Shox.com, requested a quote and was told the following by Daryl:

"Koni and Bilstein doesn't offer parts for the AWD. We don't carry anything for the AWD."

      Thought I'd pass this on.
