DIFFICULT TO START WHEN COLD -- not battery S70

Hello all,

Okay, here is the symptom: When I try to start the car first thing in the morning 95% of the time it takes around 5 seconds for the engine to start. It's either that or it dies and I have to crank it a second time. But when the engine is warm (like it was turned off for 15 minutes or so) the car always starts flawlessly.

I currently have 58k miles and will be doing the 60k service (which includes engine tune-up). Is this all it needs (new plugs, etc)? A year ago the hard start would occur around 10% of the time, then the occurance slowly went up to where it is now.

Thanks in advance.

Your symptoms don't sound like a simple tune up problem. It sounds more like a loss of fuel pressure. Try turning the key to the run position and waiting 5 seconds before you try and start the car. If it will consistantly start this way when cold, a loss of fuel pressure is the problem. The the car won't start until sufficient fuel pressure is built up again.

To the other suggestions I would add checking for a vacuum leak of any kind on the intake system. Do you have trouble codes set (check engine light on)?

The check engine light wasn't on. I actually just had a vehicle state inspection today and everything was fine.

Sounds like my 850T. It needs a throttle body cleaning as well as idle air control valve cleaning.
To verify IAC problems, try starting (when cold) with the gas pedal pushed just about 1/4 inch. Enough to open the butterfly in the TB, but not enough to increase the gas flow. This is working for my daughter because it is too cold to work on the car.
Unless your car has an ETM. I don't know if that wireless stuff works or not.

Thanks, guys. From what you're saying I guess it's nothing major. I will have the car tuned up (60k service) soon.

All filters, plugs, oil change, check of the pcv hoses and oil trap (replace if needed) as well as the service (Serpentine) belt change. I don't know why your car has trouble starting.

I just had a 60,000 mile service performed within the last 5 weeks. Lately, I have the same symptons where the car doesn't start immediately the first time in the morning. Let me know how they address your symptoms.
