Sunroof won't shut 850

The sunroof on our 93 854 GLT will not close completely. It moves freely backward and forward. However, when the glass needs to raise up into the opening for it to close, it stops moving. I have seen the repair info on Volvospeed/Bay 13 but it doesn't help. The unit can't go to the vent position until after it has gone to the closed position.

I have another complete working unit from a 95 854 GLT but I had hoped I wouldn't have to remove the entire unit from the 93 also. Getting the unit out was a little difficult but we didn't have to worry about damaging the donor car. Does anyone know how the motor is operated by the control unit? I was wondering if it sensed the higher current draw when the motor met resistance? Could it possibly be that it relies on the number of times the spinning cables make its' gear move to determine the distance the glass has moved?

Any input would be appreciated.

TIA

Don

If the SR makes its way to the front, but just won't go up in the back, try pushing the SR up with one hand while holding the button down. If that doesn't work, you will have to remove the plastic cover over the motor and ratchet it closed by hand.

I have tried to put pressure on the glass while depressing the switch but it doesn't move at all. What do you think is preventing it from moving beyond the point it has stopped at?

How do you ratchet the sunroof?

      Thanks. Don

Back in the old days, one used to be able to take the cover off of the SR motor area, insert a hex tool, and crank it by hand. I have never removed this cover on an 850/70, so it was just a guess on my part.
If you haven't done so, spray everything you can find that moves or slides with WD40, especially the pop up wind deflector. Look under the deflector and make sure it is laying flat against the roof. It is possible that the SR isn't fully forward.
There are 2 fuses associated with the SR for my V70, may be different with your 850. #35 is the normal fuse that supplies power. #37 is a circuit breaker - check this one to see if it is still good. The circuit breaker requires a 20 second delay before re-use.

Volvo DOES sell a crank for it, or if you look at the area for the crank, you might find that it's a typical hex or allen wrench type (if my memory serves me well).

None of the kids toys are jammed in there? Did you try a crowbar? Sometimes just beating the piss out of it will make you feel better. If nothing else works just put a floor jack on the center console and a 4x4 length of wood up against the roof and start pumping. Then sell the newly redesigned chitbox on Ebay for three times what it's worth. Take a chainsaw and make a convertible out of it.
