What happens when front struts go bad..do they leak fuid or 850 1995

i think my front struts are gone bad but I am not sure what to look for to be sure..The ride has become very hard and uncomfortable and just hitting the bumps hard..

should i be looking for fuild coming out the struts if they are bad or they just get hard..the car does not seem to bounce up and down when I push on the front of the bumper..

I think my V70 may be suffering from the same problem. Front end ride has become very harsh lately- thought it was the sportier tires (Bridgestone Fuzions), but I'm thinking some of the bushing may be culprit. Hopefully- as these are less of a PITA than say the struts themselves.

The struts impinge on a rubber spring seat which in turn is held by a metal strut mount. When spring seats go bad, ride can get harsh with strange noises. Strut mounts don't fail too often but they will under rough conditions. Struts going bad don't necessarily leak, but you start losing tight directional control on bumpy roads. 100-140K is probably the replace time depending on your typical driving conditions.

Replacing just spring seats and strut mounts is the same amount of work as replacing the strut. You have to remove the strut assembly, compress the spring a.nd remove the x nut to replace the seat and/or mount. The only additional thing you have to do to replace the strut is decompress the spring on the old one, compress the spring on the new one and reassemble.

I put in new Bilstein HDs and seats front and rear last summer. Very pleased with the result.

When struts go bad, the ride gets softer. Sounds like you need new spring seats. Or some new bushings, too.
If you have over 120K on the struts, I would get them replaced. Shocks.com has good prices if you do it yourself.

Well the problem is that I had the struts and the seats replaced about a year ago ..with the OE BOGE/Sachs and seats were Volvo brand..so I am trying to figure out what was not replaced...what are the chances that the Strut springs are going bad or the engine mounts..could the hydraloic engine mounts cause such a hard ride ...i also have the feeling the car is lower than before...

      thanks again
